What Is IFS?

The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model is a non-pathologizing, evidence-based, psycho-spiritual model for self-discovery and healing developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz.

Guiding Principles

  • Every person has many parts, or personalities, within them and this is normal.
  • Some parts have a protective goal. Some parts are more vulnerable. Different parts may take the lead at different times.
  • There are no bad parts. Despite their sometimes extreme or counterproductive behaviors, all parts are motivated by positive intentions for your wellbeing.
  • Every person also has within them a wise, centered Self. The Self is not a part, but rather the true essence of your being. The Self may sometimes be hidden, but it cannot be lost or destroyed.
  • When Self energy is present, a person naturally experiences resourced qualities such as curiosity, calm, compassion, confidence, connectedness, clarity, creativity, and courage.
  • Self-love, healing, safety, agency, emotional balance, and healthy relating are fostered through the welcoming, befriending, and support of the parts by the Self.

The Roles of Practitioner and Client

  • The IFS practitioner accesses their own Self energy to hold space and facilitate the work using IFS principles. The practitioner provides a safe container for the client’s parts and Self to come forward.
  • The therapist holds a curious, non-judgmental space where all parts are welcome.
  • The Self and parts of the client are invited to guide and inform the work. As a result, the client develops connection to their own Self energy and strengthens the relationship with the parts. Over time, the client can cultivate more Self-leadership both during IFS sessions and in daily life.

It is possible to reconnect to you inner source or "Self," support and stabilize your distressed parts, and move toward a more harmonious and fulfilling experience of life.
People who have previously experienced traditional talk therapy often find the IFS approach brings a new level of self-connection, healing, and change.
